The Word “Addict”

How Politicians Turned a Label Into an excuse

So, before the term addict there were just people and before us there were just the plants. No evil there.

Plants were never the problem.
Plants are a blessing.
They grow everywhere a prayer is whispered.

What each man chooses to do with them is where miracles become medicine… or poison.
But in these United States, the real poison isn’t in what man makes out of the plants.

The real poison was and is the Propaganda.

America didn’t just invent the label it weaponized it.

The word became a crowbar the government used to pry open your private life… Nationalize medicine… and justify controlling every plant God ever put on this earth.

This is the story the public was never supposed to know.

Before Government Needed the Word

In the late 1800s, nobody called anyone an “addict.”
There were no addicts… There were patients, neighbors, workers, mothers, veterans, and sick men trying to survive… but no addicts.

If someone used opium, morphine, laudanum, or cocaine, the language was simple and human:

a person with a habit
someone fighting chronic pain
a person whose nerves had given out
a veteran who didn’t ask to be carved up by war

but mainly people minded their business and just called them by name.

It wasn’t a moral issue.
It wasn’t a political issue.
It wasn’t a criminal issue.

It was medical… personal.

And because it was medical, the government had no place in it…

That was the problem for Americas first progressives whose system required a national Healthcare program and Public Education to be founded on.The key to having a strong government was having weak people so they made our great great grandparents very needy then sent them off to fight socialism. By the time they got back they had little fight left in them. They accepted the American social system and it’s help as an entitlement for suffering.

When Medicine Became Worth Controlling

Throughout the 1800’s America was drowning in cures.
Poppy tinctures. Cocaine drops. Morphine tablets. Heroin cough syrups.
Whole pages of the Sears catalog read like a pharmacy.
The plants were working.
People were healing themselves.
And nobody thought to ask permission.

It was America for God’s sake.

The government created the opportunity and capitalized on it:
a world where people could take care of themselves was unruly. But a nation of dependents would sign their rights away. Something doctors now require before treating pain. Something we have all done.

So they did what institutions always do
they manufactured a crisis that justified their solution… the solution the eastern philosophy of temperance.

They didn’t begin with science.
They began with fear, racism, and class warfare. They began labeling us as a means to compartmentalize us. To divide us on as many different issues as they could and blame us for each other’s issues.

Newspapers talked about opium dens where Asians reportedly raped white women, cocaine crazed black men who would rape white women, dope fiends lurking in alleys of colored people looking to steal your job and your woman… all fiction engineered to move public opinion. It did not matter who the user really was. It mattered who the public imagined them to be. Google Yellow fever and Refer Madness. The art of it is admirable but not everything great is good.

And in that art and imagination, the government found its leverage in its propaganda.

1910–1920: The Birth of the “Addict” the birth of a Nation

When America needed a villain to justify national drug control, they simply wrote one into existence.

The label “addict” appeared right when Washington needed:

a reason to register doctors
a reason to track medicines
a reason to criminalize ordinary sick people
a reason to nationalize the entire medical supply chain

The Harrison Narcotics Act of 1914 was advertised as a “tax.”
But it was really a registry, a surveillance system for anyone touching plant-based medicines.

You cannot control the drug without controlling the people.
You cannot control the people without a label.

Enter the addict. From that moment on:

a patient became a problem
a dependence became a crime
a wounded veteran became a threat
a mother with nerve pain became a liability
a sick man became a suspect

And just like that, medicine stopped belonging to the people…
and started belonging to the government.

What They Never Tell You About Dependence

Dependence on a substance isn’t sin.
Dependence isn’t weakness.
Dependence isn’t moral failure.
Dependence is simple biology

When Dependable turned into dependence is another topic…

Withdrawal is natural.
It should be expected.
It is not shameful.
It is not crime against your God.

But the government spun dependence on dependable medicines into degeneracy, and degeneracy into justification…

They convinced society that dependent people are dangerous, that society should hand over its sovereignty “for safety.”

That’s the original bait-and-switch. The Real Purpose of the Label

The word “addict” wasn’t created to describe a person.
It was created to control a population.

Not the people who were already dependent
but everyone watching from the sidelines saying but by the grace of God go I. The label works because it is a threat:
Comply. Don’t question us.
You’re not an addict… are you?”

It’s a modern scarlet letter used to enforce obedience.

Call someone an addict, and they lose credibility, rights, and protection.
Everyone else sees what happens to them and falls in line.

It’s not punishment.
It’s strategy used to establish the public pursuit of health over the individual.

We were made in God’s image and given dominion over ourselves, not others.
People have the right to pursue their own healing unless they harm another. It is their Right as outwardly harmless individuals.
Legislating away an individuals pursuit of health is evil disguised as righteousness.

Everyone hurts and the world was better before the New Deal. We got a New Social Contract with it…

The only true social contract is:
you take care of you for me, and I’ll take care of me for you and then we help everyone we can.

None of this fits the government’s business model.

A self-governing, self-medicating population is unprofitable and uncontrollable.

So they build roads that never last,
start wars that never end,
and create social problems they can fix only badly enough to keep funding flowing.

Drug policy is no different.

They don’t stop addiction.
They administer it. They organize it. They profit off it.

Why I’m Writing This

I’m writing because the people called “addicts” today are being abused by the same kind of people who will be called addicts tomorrow and they cannot see it coming.

I’m writing to defend the wounded before they are labeled, not after.

I’m writing because a government that punishes the sick will eventually punish the well.

And I’m writing because the greatest lie ever told in America is that you don’t have the right to heal yourself.

You do.
You always have.

In the End

The word “addict” didn’t just shame people.
It didn’t just divide them.
It didn’t just strip medicine from those who needed it.

It served its true purpose:
to nationalize healing and centralize power.

But a label only has power if we let it.

Don’t let it.

Defend the human beings behind the labels,
before the label becomes yours to carry.
